What is federal?

Federal means that a country is run by more than one group, some big, some small, working together like a team.

Imagine you and your friends all live in different neighborhoods, but you all go to the same school. Each neighborhood has its own rules about what games you can play during recess, but everyone agrees on how the school should be cleaned up after lunch. That’s kind of like federal, each group (like a neighborhood or a state) has some control over their own things, but they all work together under one big school (or country).

Like a Team with Different Jobs

In a federal system, there are usually two main groups:

  • One that makes rules for the whole country (like the principal of the school)
  • Others that make rules for smaller parts, like neighborhoods or states (like each class in the school)

They all have their own jobs, but they need to agree on some things so everything runs smoothly, just like how you and your friends need to agree on cleaning up after lunch.Federal means that a country is run by more than one group, some big, some small, working together like a team.
