What is extinct?

Extinct means there are no more living members of a species left, they’re all gone.

Imagine you have a favorite toy that only comes in one color, and suddenly it’s not made anymore. One day, you see it on the shelf at the store, but the next day, it's gone forever. That’s like being extinct, no more of those toys are left anywhere in the world.

What Does It Mean to Be a Species?

A species is a group of living things that can have babies together and look pretty much the same. Like how all dogs are part of one species, even though they come in many different shapes and sizes.

If no more dogs were born anywhere in the world, and all the current ones died, then dogs would be extinct, just like your favorite toy.

Examples of Extinct Things

The dodo bird is a famous example. It lived on an island called Mauritius, but when humans came there, they started eating dodos and cutting down their homes. Eventually, no more dodos were born, so they became extinct.

That’s how extinct works, it happens when the last member of a species dies, and nobody is left to continue the line.Extinct means there are no more living members of a species left, they’re all gone.
