An eruption is when something inside the Earth bursts out through a hole or crack in the ground.
Imagine you have a big jar full of bubbles and boiling water, that’s like what's happening deep underground. The Earth has hot rocks, called magma, bubbling around. When the pressure gets too high, it pushes its way up to the surface, boom! That's an eruption.
Like a volcano having a tantrum
Think of a volcano like a giant cake tin with a lid on top. The magma is like hot batter inside. If the lid cracks or pops off, the hot stuff rushes out, splat!, making lava, smoke, and maybe even rocks fly everywhere.
Sometimes you can see this in real life, like when a volcano erupts near a town, and people have to run away from flying rocks and molten rock.
Eruptions aren’t just for volcanoes
Other things can erupt too. A geyser, like Old Faithful, erupts with hot water and steam because of pressure underground, it's like a giant boiling kettle that suddenly lets all the steam out!
Examples
- Imagine a soda bottle shaking and then exploding, that's like a volcanic eruption.
- Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered Pompeii in ash, trapping many people.
