What is Epigenetics? - with Nessa Carey?

Epigenetics is like a special kind of note that tells your body what to do with its instructions, without changing them.

Imagine you have a recipe book, it has all the recipes for making different kinds of cookies. But sometimes, you want to make only chocolate chip cookies instead of sugar cookies. You don’t change the recipe; you just put a note on the sugar cookie page that says “skip this one today.” That’s like epigenetics, it helps decide which parts of your body get used or not, without changing the original instructions.

How It Works

Your body uses instructions from something called DNA. These are like the recipe book. But sometimes, those instructions need to be read differently depending on what your body is doing, like when you're growing up or getting sick.

Epigenetics is like a note in the margin of that recipe book. It can say things like “use this ingredient more” or “don’t use it at all.” These notes help your body know which parts of the recipe to follow, without changing the actual words on the page.

So even though your DNA stays the same, your body can behave differently, just by adding or removing those little notes.
