Emotional dysregulation is when your feelings come on really fast and feel really strong, like a storm in your heart.
Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, and everything is perfect. Then suddenly, someone takes it from you. Your feelings go from happy to upset very quickly, and it feels like your whole world just changed. That's emotional dysregulation, when your emotions switch fast and feel bigger than they should.
Like a Roller Coaster
Sometimes, your feelings might go up and down like a roller coaster. One minute you're laughing, and the next minute you're crying. It's not because something bad happened, it just feels that way inside.
How It Feels Inside
Think of your brain as a room with a light switch. When everything is calm, the lights are dim. But when emotions come in fast, it's like someone flipped on all the lights at once, bright and blinding. That’s what emotional dysregulation feels like inside your head.
Examples
- A child throws a tantrum in the grocery store because they can't handle frustration.
- An adult yells at their partner over a small argument, then feels guilty afterward.
- Someone cries uncontrollably when something goes wrong at work.
