What is Ecology and evolution?

Ecology and evolution are all about how living things grow, change, and work together over time.

What is Ecology?

Ecology is like a big game of "who helps who" in nature. Imagine you're playing with your toys, some of them are friends, some are enemies, and some just ignore each other. In ecology, we look at how plants, animals, and even tiny bugs live together in a place called an ecosystem.

For example, bees help flowers by pollinating them, which means they get to eat the fruit or nectar later. That’s teamwork! Sometimes bigger animals like wolves hunt deer, that's not so friendly, but it helps keep the numbers balanced. Ecology is all about understanding these relationships and how everything affects each other.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is like when you grow up and change over time, but for animals and plants. Think of it as a slow game of "transformer" where creatures slowly get better at surviving and having babies.

Long ago, there were dinosaurs who looked nothing like the ones we know today. Over millions of years, they changed shape and size because some traits helped them live longer or find food easier, just like how you might grow taller or learn new skills as you age. That’s evolution in action!

Examples

  1. A forest of trees and animals living together is an ecosystem. Over time, some animals may grow bigger or change color to survive better.
  2. When a new type of bird arrives in a forest, it might compete with the old birds for food, changing who lives there.
  3. Some fish can live in both fresh and salt water because they evolved over many years.
