What is DNA?

DNA is like a recipe book that tells your body how to grow and work.

Imagine you have a really long string made up of tiny colored beads. Each color stands for a different letter, and together they form words, just like in a book. This string is what scientists call DNA. It's inside almost every cell in your body, coiled up tightly so it can fit inside the little space of a cell.

This special recipe book has instructions for making everything you need to live, from your hair color to how your heart beats. When you grow, your body uses these recipes to build new cells and even new people (like babies).
