Divisibility means when one number can be split evenly into another number without leaving any leftovers.
Imagine you have 12 cookies, and you want to share them with your friends. If you have 3 friends, each gets exactly 4 cookies, no extra cookie, no missing cookie. That means 12 is divisible by 3 because it splits evenly.
But if you had 5 friends instead, and still only 12 cookies, you'd give out 2 cookies to each friend (that’s 10 total), but there would be 2 cookies left over, those are the leftovers. So 12 is not divisible by 5 because it doesn’t split evenly.
What makes a number divisible?
Some numbers have special rules that help you know if they can be divided without leftovers:
- If a number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, it’s divisible by 2.
- If the sum of its digits is divisible by 3, then the whole number is too.
- If a number ends in 0 or 5, it's divisible by 5.
These rules are like shortcuts, they help you know if sharing will go smoothly, just like knowing whether your cookies will be shared evenly or not.
Examples
- 6 can be divided by 2 or 3 without leaving any remainder.
- A number is divisible if it divides evenly into another with no leftovers.
