What is discomfort?

Discomfort is when your body or mind feels unhappy because something isn’t just right.

Imagine you’re wearing a really tight shoe, it squishes your toes and makes them hurt. That’s discomfort! It’s like when your favorite snack is gone, and you have to eat something you don’t like. Your tummy feels upset, and that’s also discomfort.

What Discomfort Feels Like

Discomfort can be in your body or your brain. When you’re sitting on the floor for a long time, your legs get tingly, that’s physical discomfort. If you’re trying to solve a puzzle but can’t figure it out, your brain feels confused and tired, that’s mental discomfort.

Sometimes, discomfort makes you want to stop what you're doing. Like when you’re eating something spicy, and your tongue feels like it's on fire! You might say, “I need to drink some water!”

But discomfort isn’t always bad, it can tell you something is wrong so you can fix it. Like when your tooth hurts, it tells you to visit the dentist!
