What is diegetic?

Diegetic means everything you can see and hear inside the story world, like characters, sounds, and things happening around them.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy car on the floor. That's diegetic, it's part of the world you're playing in. Now, imagine your big brother walks in and starts talking to you while you play. His voice is also diegetic, because it’s coming from inside your play world.

But if your mom calls out “Time for dinner!” from another room, that’s not diegetic, it's like a sound from outside the toy car world.
