Density is how tight or loose things are packed together inside something.
Imagine you have two boxes that look exactly the same, same size, same shape. But one box feels heavier than the other when you pick it up. That’s because the stuff inside is more packed together, which means it has a higher density.
What Makes Density Happen?
Think of sand and feathers. A cup full of sand feels much heavier than a cup full of feathers, even though both cups are the same size. That’s because the sand particles are smaller and fit together more closely, making them denser than the fluffy feathers.
Now imagine you have two bags of marbles, one has big marbles, the other has small ones. The bag with small marbles will feel heavier even if both bags hold the same number of marbles. That’s because the small marbles take up less space and are more packed together, making them denser.
So density is just how much stuff you can fit into a certain amount of space, like how many marbles or sand particles you can squeeze into one cup or bag!
Examples
- Ice cubes float in your drink because ice is less dense than liquid water.
