What is deformation?

Deformation is when something changes shape because it feels a push or a pull.

Imagine you have a playdough ball in your hand. When you press on it with your finger, the ball gets squished and changes shape, that’s deformation! It's like when you sit on a soft chair, and it bends under your weight. The chair is deforming because of you.

What Causes Deformation?

Sometimes, things get stretched or squeezed. Think about pulling on a rubber band, it gets longer. That’s stretching deformation. If you squeeze a sponge, it gets smaller, that's squeezing deformation.

Just like how your body moves when you jump, objects move and change shape when they're pushed or pulled by something else. The more force you use, the more they deform!

So next time you play with clay or sit on a chair, remember: you’re seeing deformation in action!
