What is curvature?

Curvature is how much something bends, like when you fold a piece of paper or take a turn on your bike.

Imagine you're riding your bike on a straight path. That’s easy, no effort needed to keep going forward. But then, you come to a curve, and suddenly you have to lean in to stay balanced. The more sharply the road bends, the more you feel that push to the side. That sharp bend is an example of curvature.

Think of a straight road as a calm lake, smooth and even. Now imagine a bumpy road or one that loops around, like a rollercoaster track. The more it twists, the more curved it is. A circle has constant curvature, every part of it bends in the same way.

Take a piece of paper and fold it into a half-circle. That folded edge has a lot of curvature, it’s all bent together. If you make a full circle, like rolling the paper into a tube, that's even more curvy!
