What is core-collapse?

Core-collapse is when a star gets so heavy that it can't hold itself up anymore and suddenly crashes down on its own, like a giant cosmic pancake stack falling apart.

What happens inside the star?

Imagine you're in a super crowded elevator. Everyone is pushing against each other, trying not to fall over. That’s kind of what's happening inside a star, it's all the gas and heat pushing outwards, keeping the star from collapsing. But when the star runs out of fuel, that push goes away.

The big crash

Without that push, everything falls in, like when you take your hand off a balloon and it suddenly deflates. This falling-in makes the center of the star get super hot and dense, creating a neutron star or even a black hole, depending on how heavy the original star was.

It's like if you had a giant ball of jelly that suddenly turned into a hard, tiny stone, all because everything inside it squeezed together. That’s core-collapse in action!
