Compression is when we make something smaller without losing what it really is.
Imagine you have a big, messy pile of toys, all over the floor. That’s like a file on your computer that takes up lots of space. Now, if you tidy them up and put them in a toy box, they still are the same toys, just easier to carry around. That’s compression!
Like Packing for a Trip
Let’s say you’re going on a trip. You have all your clothes scattered everywhere, that’s like a big file. But if you fold them neatly and pack them in a suitcase, it takes up less space. The clothes are still the same, just more organized.
That’s what compression does to files. It makes them smaller so they take up less room on your computer or phone, kind of like how packing helps you carry more stuff without getting overwhelmed.
You can even un-pack them later, and everything stays the same!
Examples
- A ZIP file shrinks your holiday photos so you can email them quickly.
- You compress a video to watch it on your phone without buffering.
