What is Compositing? | Intro to VFX?

Compositing is when you mix different pictures together to make one cool new picture.

Imagine you’re playing with building blocks, each block is a separate picture, like a person, a car, or a background. Compositing is like putting those blocks together in just the right way so they look like they belong in the same scene.

Like Making a Puzzle

Think of it as making a puzzle from different pieces. One piece might be a kid riding a bike, another could be a sunny sky, and a third might be some trees. A compositor, someone who does compositing, puts those pieces together using special tools on the computer. They make sure everything lines up perfectly, like when you match two puzzle pieces so they fit just right.

Like Magic… But Not Really

You don’t need magic to do this, just patience and practice. It’s like when you take photos of your friends and glue them into a collage with paper and glue. A compositor does something similar, but on a computer, using layers and effects.

And that's how they make movies look so real, by mixing different pictures together!

  2. Combining different parts of an explosion using layers on a computer to make it look realistic.
  3. Adding a digital character into a live-action scene so they appear as if they were there all along.
