What is Ceramics?

Ceramics are like super strong clay that becomes hard when you heat it up.

Imagine you have a piece of clay, the kind you use to make pots in art class. Now, if you put that clay into a kiln, which is like an oven but way hotter, something amazing happens: it turns into ceramics! It becomes hard and strong, like the bottom of your favorite mug or the plate you eat off every day.

How Ceramics Are Made

When you heat up clay, it goes through a process called firing. This is like giving the clay a really hot bath, it makes it solid and tough so it doesn’t break easily. You can even paint on it before firing, and the colors stay bright.

Examples of Ceramics Around You

  • The bowl you eat cereal from
  • The tiles on your bathroom floor
  • The bricks in your house

Ceramics are everywhere, working hard to keep things strong, just like how you work hard at play!
