What is Carbon dioxide (CO₂)?

Carbon dioxide is a special kind of gas that we breathe out and plants use to grow.

Imagine you're blowing bubbles into a bubble wand, each time you blow, you’re making a tiny bubble of air. Now think about when you finish blowing bubbles and your lungs feel like they’ve been working hard. That’s kind of what happens in our bodies: when we breathe out, we let go of some carbon dioxide.

What does carbon dioxide look like?

If you've ever seen a soda bottle fizz up after you open it, that's carbon dioxide escaping! It's the same gas that makes your soda bubbly and gives it that refreshing pop. In the air around us, we can’t see it, but it’s always there, just like how we can’t see the wind, but we feel it when it moves our hair.

Why is carbon dioxide important?

Plants use carbon dioxide to make food. It's like a special ingredient that helps them grow. When you eat an apple or a carrot, you're eating something that started with carbon dioxide!

So next time you open a soda bottle or feel your lungs after a big breath, remember, you’re having a little chat with carbon dioxide!
