What is Candelas (cd)?

A candela is a way to measure how bright something looks, like how much light it gives off.

Imagine you're sitting in a room with one small lamp on. Now imagine that same room, but with a big, shiny flashlight shining all over the place. The flashlight feels way brighter than the little lamp. That’s because it has more candelas, more brightness power!

Like a Lightbulb on a Ladder

Think of a candela as like how many lightbulbs are shining from one spot. If you have just one tiny bulb, that's not too bright. But if you stack 100 bulbs on top of each other, all lighting up at the same time, that’s super bright! That big pile would be 100 candelas.

How We Use It

People use candelas when they make lights for flashlights, lamps, and even car headlights. The more candelas, the brighter the light. So if you ever want a flashlight that can light up a whole room, or even a dark cave, look for one with lots of candelas!
