What is can?

"Can" is a word that tells us something is possible or allowed to happen.

Imagine you have a toy box full of your favorite toys, cars, blocks, and action figures. Now, suppose I say, "You can play with all the toys today." That means it's okay for you to choose any toy you like. You're not limited; you have freedom.

How "Can" Works

  • If someone says, "You can do that," it means they’re letting you try something new or exciting.
  • If they say, "You cannot do that," it means there’s a rule, maybe you have to finish your homework first before playing with the toys.

Think of "can" like a door in a room. When someone says "You can go inside," it's like the door is open and waiting for you. You just need to walk through!

Sometimes, people say things like, "I can run really fast," which means they believe or know that they have the ability to do something, just like how you might believe you can climb the tallest tree in your backyard!
