What is Calvinism?

Calvinism is a way of understanding God that says He decides everything and loves us deeply, even before we do anything to earn it.

Imagine you have a huge, powerful garden where you plant seeds. Most people think they get to choose which seeds grow by watering them just right. But in this special garden, the gardener already knows exactly which seeds will become beautiful flowers and which will stay small. He doesn't force them; he just gives them everything they need to be what He wants them to be.

The Five Big Points

This idea is often remembered with a funny word: TULIP. It stands for five simple rules about how God works.

  1. Total Depravity: We are like plants that can’t grow on their own without the gardener’s sun and rain. We need help to be good.
  2. Unconditional Election: The gardener picks who gets special love not because we were extra nice, but just because He chose us. It is a free gift.
  3. Limited Atonement: Jesus died specifically for those chosen plants, making sure they get strong roots.
  4. Irresistible Grace: When the gardener calls a plant to grow, it will grow. The sun shines down, and the flower turns toward it naturally, like a sunflower chasing light.
  5. Perseverance of the Saints: Once God starts loving you and helping you grow, He never lets go. You stay in His garden forever.

Think of it like a sturdy leash on a strong dog. The dog walks freely, but the leash keeps it safe within the yard. Calvinists believe God holds that leash tightly. It is not about us working hard to keep God happy; it is about God keeping us safe because He decided to do so long ago.

It can sound strict, like following a rulebook, but Calvinists say it is actually very comforting. You don’t have to worry if you are "good enough." You just rest in the care of the One who made the plan from the start.
