What is buoyancy?

Buoyancy is what makes things float, like when you jump into a pool and feel lighter in the water.

Imagine you're holding a big balloon filled with air. It feels easy to lift because air is light. Now imagine that same balloon, but instead of air, it's full of water, suddenly, it’s much harder to lift! That’s kind of how buoyancy works. When something is in water, the water pushes up on it, helping it float.

Why things float

If you drop a rock into a lake, it sinks because rock is heavy and doesn’t push much water aside. But if you drop a boat, it floats, even though it’s made of wood or metal, because the boat pushes a lot of water out of the way. That pushed-out water creates an upward force called buoyancy, which helps the boat stay on top.

Think of it like this: when you get into a bath, the water level goes up. The more water you push aside, the more buoyant force there is, and the easier it is to float!
