A block of wood is simply a piece of tree that has been cut into a neat shape so it does not look like a messy branch anymore.
Imagine you are eating an apple. When you take a big bite, the apple loses its round, natural form and becomes a new shape with straight edges. A block of wood is like that bitten apple, but made from a tree trunk. It starts as part of a standing giant in the forest, full of rings and bark. Then, people use strong saws to chop off pieces until they are left with solid, heavy chunks.
Why it feels special
You can hold it in your hands right now. Unlike a plastic toy which might feel light or hollow, wood has weight. It is dense, meaning the material inside is packed tight together. If you tap two blocks against each other, they make a dull thud sound because the fibers inside are strong and fibrous, like tiny ropes woven together. This structure makes it good for building things that need to stay still and sturdy.
Where does it come from?
Wood comes from trees. When a tree is cut down, its trunk goes to a mill. There, machines slice the trunk into long planks or square logs. These are then stacked in dry rooms so all the water leaves them. Once dried, they become what we call lumber. You see blocks of wood every day as furniture legs, toy building bricks, or even the chopsticks you use for dinner. It is a natural material that feels warm and smooth, unlike cold metal or hard stone.
