What is birth?

Birth is when a baby comes out of its mummy and starts life on its own.

Imagine you have a toy that’s inside a big box. The box is closed tight, and the toy can't come out. But then, the box opens, poof!, the toy is free! That’s like what happens during birth. The baby is inside the mummy's body, like it's in a special kind of box. When the mummy’s body opens up, the baby comes out and can start playing in the world.

The baby grows inside the mummy for about nine months. It’s like baking a cake, you mix everything together, let it sit, and then pop! it's ready to come out. The mummy uses special muscles to help push the baby out, just like how you use your arms to push something heavy.

Once the baby is outside, it takes its first breaths, that’s when it starts using lungs for the first time, instead of getting air through the umbilical cord, which was like a special straw connecting it to the mummy. Then, the baby can start exploring the world, just like you do every day!
