What is barley?

Barley is a kind of plant that people grow to make food, just like how we grow wheat or corn.

What barley looks like

Imagine you're in a field with lots of green grass, but this grass has little bunches at the top, almost like tiny brooms. That's barley! When it’s ready, farmers cut it and let it dry. Then they turn those bunches into something called grains, which are small, round pieces you can see if you look closely.

What we do with barley

Barley grains are super useful. Sometimes, they’re used to make cereal, the kind you eat for breakfast. Other times, they become beer, which is a fizzy drink that grown-ups like to have. It’s also used in some kinds of bread and soups.

You can even find barley in your pantry! Next time you see a box labeled barley, think of it as a special kind of grass that helps make tasty food.
