What is autotrophic?

Autotrophic means something can make its own food from simple ingredients, just like a chef makes a meal from basic ingredients.

Like a Chef in Nature

Imagine you’re at home, and you want to cook a sandwich. You use bread, cheese, and ham, all things you already have. Now imagine if you could make bread, cheese, and ham from nothing, just air, water, and sunlight! That’s what autotrophic means.

Plants Are Like Autotrophic Chefs

Plants are the best example of autotrophic beings. They take in carbon dioxide from the air and water from the ground, then use sunlight to turn them into sugar, their food! This process is called photosynthesis, but you don’t need to remember that name.

So when a plant makes its own food using sunlight, it's like a chef in nature who doesn't need any help, just the right ingredients and a little bit of sunshine.
