What is automaticity?

Automaticity is when you can do something quickly and without thinking about it, just like how you know your way around a familiar place.

Imagine you're walking to school every day. At first, you have to count the number of steps or think about which turn to take. But after doing it many times, you don’t need to think, your body just knows what to do. That’s automaticity in action!

Like a Learned Song

Think of learning a song. When you first learn it, you have to concentrate on every word and note. But once you’ve practiced enough, you can sing the whole thing without thinking, that's automaticity too! Your brain has learned the pattern so well that it can do the job all by itself.

Automaticity helps you in many parts of life, from reading to riding a bike, because your brain is free to focus on more interesting things while your body handles what it already knows.
