What is authentication?

Authentication is when you prove who you are so someone else knows it’s really you.

Imagine you have a treasure box that only you can open. To get in, you need a special key, like your password or fingerprint. When you use your key, the treasure box opens and lets you in. That's authentication!

Like a Secret Club

Think of it like joining a secret club. You have to say a secret word, or show a special badge, so the club knows it’s really you trying to get in. If someone else tries to use your key or say your secret word, they won’t be let in, because the treasure box or the club only trusts you!

The Real World

When you log into your favorite game with your username and password, that’s authentication too. You're telling the game, “It's really me trying to play!” And just like your treasure box, the game only lets you in if it knows it's you.
