What is atmosphere?

The atmosphere is like a cozy blanket around Earth that keeps us warm and safe.

Imagine you're wearing your favorite sweater on a chilly day, it keeps you from getting too cold. The atmosphere works the same way, but instead of wool, it's made up of layers of air that wrap around our planet. These layers help keep Earth at just the right temperature so we can live comfortably.

How It Feels

When you blow on your hand to warm it up, you're moving air, kind of like how the atmosphere moves around Earth. Sometimes, when the air is still and calm, it feels gentle; other times, when there's a gust of wind, it feels lively and active.

What It Does

The atmosphere also helps protect us from space stuff, like tiny rocks that might hit Earth, kind of like how your sweater protects you from the cold. It’s made mostly of nitrogen and oxygen, which are the gases we breathe in every day.

Without the atmosphere, Earth would be a lot colder and much less friendly to life!
