What is Asymmetric information?

Asymmetric information is when one person knows more than another in a deal or situation.

Imagine you and your friend are trading toys at recess. Your friend knows that their toy is broken inside, but you don’t. That means your friend has more information about the toy than you do, this is asymmetric information! It’s like having a secret advantage in a game.

Like a Lemonade Stand

Let's say you're running a lemonade stand and your neighbor is selling lemonade too. You know that your lemonade uses fresh lemons, but your neighbor doesn’t know that. They think their lemonade is just as good, but it’s actually made with old, squishy lemons. That means you have more information about the quality of your drink than your neighbor does.

This can make things unfair. If someone has more information in a deal, they might get a better result, like getting more money for their toy or selling a less tasty lemonade at a higher price!

It’s not magic, it's just knowing something the other person doesn’t.
