What is aphantasia?

Aphantasia is when someone can't see pictures in their mind, like a movie screen that's always dark.

Imagine you're listening to your favorite song. Most people close their eyes and picture the lyrics or imagine the singer dancing. But if you have aphantasia, it's like trying to watch a movie with no image, just sound, but nothing to look at.

Like Trying to Draw Without Seeing

Think of drawing from memory. If you're asked to draw a cat you've seen before, most people can picture the cat in their head and then draw it. But someone with aphantasia might not be able to see the cat, they just know it's there. It's like trying to paint a sunset without being able to look at it.

Some People Have It, Some Don't

Just like some kids can count to 10 in their head and others need to use fingers, some people have aphantasia and some don’t. It’s not a problem, it's just different! Aphantasia is when someone can't see pictures in their mind, like a movie screen that's always dark.
