Anorthite is a type of rock that’s made mostly from a special kind of mineral called plagioclase feldspar.
Like a Layer Cake
Think of anorthite as a layer cake, it's like the top layer of a giant rock cake found on the Moon! Just like how you have different layers in a cake, anorthite has a special structure that makes it strong and pretty. This kind of rock is made mostly from one kind of feldspar called calcium-rich plagioclase, which gives it its light gray or white color.
Found on the Moon
Scientists believe that anorthite formed when the Moon was very young, right after a big crash, like when you drop your favorite toy and it breaks into pieces. The hot lava from that crash cooled down slowly, forming this special rock. You can even find bits of anorthite in moon rocks that astronauts brought back to Earth!
