What Is An Atom And How Do We Know?

An atom is like the tiny building block that everything around you is made from, even your toys and your favorite snacks!

Think of an atom like a super small marble, but it's not solid. Inside this little marble, there are tiny particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are heavy and sit in the middle, kind of like a chocolate center inside your favorite candy. Electrons are light and zoom around outside, like bees buzzing around a flower.

Even though we can’t see atoms with our eyes, scientists have found clever ways to figure out what they're made of. One way is by using something called microscopes, which act like super-powered magnifying glasses, not just for looking at tiny things on paper, but even for seeing the tiniest parts of matter!

Another way is through experiments, like when scientists send tiny particles crashing into other tiny particles and watch what happens, it's a bit like playing with marbles, but much smaller! By doing these kinds of tests again and again, they’ve learned all about how atoms work.
