What is amnesia?

Amnesia is when your brain can't remember things, just like when you lose a toy and can’t find it anywhere.

Imagine your brain is like a big box full of toys, each toy is a memory. When you have amnesia, it's like the lid falls off the box, and all the toys spill out or get mixed up. You might not remember where you put your favorite teddy bear, or even who you are!

How it happens

Sometimes, amnesia happens after a big bump on the head, kind of like when you fall and hit your knee really hard. Your brain gets shaken up, and some of those toys (memories) get lost or hidden.

What it feels like

If you have amnesia, you might forget things that just happened, like what you had for breakfast. Or you might not remember where you live, it's like being in a big maze and not knowing how to find your way home!

Sometimes the brain can remember some things but not others, it’s like having a box with some toys missing or covered by a blanket.
