What is American Sign Language (ASL)?

American Sign Language, or ASL, is like having a super cool way to talk without using your voice.

Imagine you're playing with your toys and want to tell your friend something exciting, but you can’t speak because you’re too busy building a castle. Instead of saying it, you use your hands, face, and body to show what you mean. That’s kind of like how ASL works! People who use ASL move their hands in special ways, make facial expressions, and sometimes even wiggle their bodies, all to talk to each other.

How It Feels

Using ASL is like having a secret language with your best friend. When you sign, it’s as if you're drawing pictures in the air that only you two can see and understand. You don’t need words; you just need motion!

Why It Matters

Some people hear sounds, but they might not always be able to speak, or maybe they just love using ASL more! Just like some kids prefer writing notes instead of talking during lunchtime, some people use ASL to share their thoughts and feelings with others.
