What is alphabetic?

Alphabetic means things are arranged in the order of letters.

Imagine you have a big box full of jelly beans, all different colors and flavors. If you want to find your favorite red ones quickly, you might sort them by color. That’s like how alphabetic works, but with letters instead of jelly beans.

Sorting Like a Library

In a library, books are often sorted alphabetically by the author's name. So all the books by A come first, then B, and so on, just like your red jelly beans come before blue ones. This way, when you're looking for a book by Cindy, you know exactly where to go.

Alphabetical Order in Real Life

Your alphabet has 26 letters, from A to Z. When you line up your toys or your crayons in the order of their names, that's also alphabetic sorting. So if you have a toy called Apple, it will come before a toy named Banana.

Next time you see words listed in order, like in a dictionary, remember: they're just sorted like your jelly beans or crayons!
