What is agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia is when someone gets really scared of being in certain places and can’t leave them easily.

Imagine you love going to the park to play on the swings, but one day, you’re at the park and suddenly feel super nervous. Your heart pounds, your tummy feels weird, and you don’t want to go anywhere else because you're worried something bad will happen. That’s like agoraphobia: it's fear of open spaces or places that feel too big or too busy.

What Makes It Feel Scary?

Agoraphobia is not just about being scared of crowds, sometimes it’s even scarier than that! Think of it like being stuck in a giant maze with no exit. A person with agoraphobia might get really anxious if they’re:

  • In a big open space, like the middle of a shopping mall
  • On public transport, like a bus or train
  • In a place where there are too many people around

It’s kind of like being in a playground, but instead of fun games, you're facing a big scary challenge, and you don’t want to leave until you feel safe again!
