What is addiction? | APA?

Addiction is when something you really like becomes too much and starts to control your life, just like your favorite candy can make it hard to stop eating even when you're full.

What addiction feels like

Imagine you have a toy that makes you laugh every time you play with it. At first, you play with it a little bit each day. But soon, you want to play with it all the time, even when you’re tired or hungry. You might forget about your homework or your friends because you're too busy having fun with your toy. That’s kind of like addiction: it starts as something fun and easy, but over time, it takes up so much of your day that it feels hard to stop.

What happens in the brain

When you do something you really enjoy, like playing with your favorite toy, your brain gives you a happy feeling. It wants more of that happiness, so it tells you to keep going. That’s why it can be tricky to stop, your brain is working hard to make sure you have more fun!
