Abiotic means something that is not alive and never was.
Imagine you're playing with your favorite building blocks. Those blocks are abiotic, they don’t grow, they don’t breathe, and they don’t feel happy or sad when you stack them up. They’re just there, ready to be used.
Like a Rock in the Sandbox
Think of a rock in the sandbox. That rock is abiotic too. It doesn’t move on its own, it doesn’t talk, but it’s still super important! When you dig around with your shovel, that rock might pop out, and then you can use it to build a castle.
Biotic vs Abiotic
Now imagine a worm in the sandbox. That worm is biotic because it's alive. It wriggles, eats dirt, and maybe even tries to escape when you dig too close! The worm is part of the living world, while the rock and your blocks are part of the non-living world, that’s the abiotic world.
So remember: abiotic means not alive, like rocks, sand, or building blocks. They might be small, but they help make big things happen!
Examples
- Saltwater in the ocean is abiotic since it doesn't have life.
