What is a Relay? (Interactive!) - Electronics Basics 8?

A relay is like a smart door that opens and closes to let electricity go through, just by getting a tiny signal.

Imagine you have a toy car that needs a lot of power to start, but you only have a small button to press. That’s where the relay comes in! It acts as a helper: when you press the button (which sends a little electricity), the relay uses that little signal to turn on a bigger light or even make your toy car zoom off.

How it works

Think of the relay like a switch with a secret power. When you send a tiny current to it, it flips a switch inside, and poof, a big current can now flow through! It’s like having a small key that unlocks a big door.

You might already know this from your home: when you press the light switch on your bedroom wall, it sends a little signal to turn on the big lights. The relay does something similar but for bigger jobs, like turning on a fan or starting a robot!

Relays are used everywhere, from computers and phones to cars and toys. They're like electric helpers that make big things happen with just a small push!
