What is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p¹?

This is how we write down what makes up atoms, like the building blocks of everything around you, including you!

The House of Electrons

Imagine each number and letter in 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p¹ is a room in a house, and the electrons are like toys inside those rooms. Each room has a special name:

  • 1s, 2s, 2p, etc., are different kinds of rooms.
  • The numbers after them tell you how many toys (electrons) are in that room.

So 1s² means the first floor’s main room (1s) has 2 electrons.

Then 2s² means the second floor's main room has 2, and 2p⁶ is like a big playroom on the second floor with 6 toys.

Next, 3s² is another room on the third floor with 2 toys, and finally, 3p¹ is a little corner of that third floor with just one toy.

This whole list, 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p¹, shows how many electrons are in each room (or energy level) of an atom. This specific setup describes the atom of aluminum, which is used to make cans and window frames!
