What if An Ancient Roman Saw Our Modern World?

If an Ancient Roman stepped out of a time machine, they would see their grand empire shrunk down to tiny, glowing boxes and endless lines of metal beasts rushing across paved roads.

The Metal Beasts

They would be most shocked by the cars. These are not living horses but loud, hard-shelled beetles made of steel that run without anyone pushing them. They eat yellow liquid from underground tanks instead of grass. Imagine a chariot with no horses, zooming so fast it looks like it is floating on wheels. The roads are still there, wide and straight just like the old ones, but now they have glowing white lines painted on them to keep the beetles in their lanes.

The Tiny Glowing Slates

In our pockets, we carry small, flat stones that glow. These are smartphones. To a Roman, who used scrolls of papyrus covered in black ink, these screens would look like enchanted glass tablets. But they do not use magic; they use light and electricity.

Imagine if you could speak to someone far away, and their voice came out of the stone instead of through the air. That is what we do when we talk on our phones. The screen shows pictures that move, just like the frescoes on Roman walls, but they change every second. We write letters on them by tapping with our fingers, replacing the heavy quill and inkpot with a simple tap-tap motion.

The Roman would not understand how these things work inside, but they would recognize the purpose. We still build houses, we still wear clothes, and we still love our children. The tools look different, but the heart of human life beats just as strongly today as it did two thousand years ago.
