What Happens When Bananas Ripen?

Bananas go from yellow to brown and get softer as they ripen.

When a banana is green, it’s like a sleepy kid who doesn’t want to wake up, it’s not ready to be eaten yet. But when it starts to ripen, something happens inside the fruit that makes it change color and texture.

The Inside Changes

Inside the banana, there are little helpers called enzymes. These enzymes work like tiny chefs in a kitchen. When the banana is green, these chefs are taking a break. But as time goes on, they start to do their job, they break down the hard parts of the banana and make it softer and sweeter.

The Color Changes

The color change happens because of another little helper called chlorophyll. This one gives the banana its green color. As the banana ripens, chlorophyll starts to fade away, like a paintbrush running out of paint. Without the green color, other colors, like yellow and brown, become more visible.

Soon enough, the banana is ready to be eaten, and it’s soft, sweet, and full of flavor!
