Afghanistan’s female academics had to leave or hide because people tried to stop them from learning and teaching.
Imagine you're at a school where everyone is allowed to play, but suddenly, the teachers say only boys can go outside and learn. The girls are told they have to stay inside and not show their faces, it's like being stuck in a room with no windows. That’s what happened to many female academics in Afghanistan.
What did they do?
Some of them packed up their books and left the country, just like when you leave your toy box to go play at a friend’s house. Others stayed hidden, teaching from behind curtains or using secret messages, it was like playing hide-and-seek with knowledge!
Why is this important?
These women were teachers, scientists, and writers. They helped others learn and grow, just like how your favorite teacher helps you understand math or reading.
But now, they can't do that as much, it's like taking away the toys from a child who loves to play.
Examples
- A girl wants to study math, but her family says she can't go to school anymore.
- A teacher is forced to leave her job because the government no longer allows women to teach.
- A university closes its doors to female students after a new rule is passed.
