What does it mean to feel understood?

Feeling understood means someone gets what you're thinking or feeling, like they can read your mind without you saying a word.

Imagine you’re playing with your favorite toy, maybe it’s a red ball that bounces really high. You throw it as hard as you can, and it goes whoosh all the way to the top of the room. Then you look at your friend, and they say, “Wow, that was so cool! I know exactly how you feel!” That’s feeling understood, like someone else knows what makes you happy or excited without you having to explain it.

What does it sound like?

When you're feeling understood, it's like when someone says the same words you were thinking. For example, if you're sad because your ice cream melted, and your mom says, “I know how much you love that ice cream,” you feel like she knows you inside out, even before you say anything else.

What does it look like?

Sometimes people show they understand you by doing things that match what you’re thinking or feeling. If you're tired after a long day at the park and you say, “I want to rest,” your dad might say, “Let’s go home and take a nap.” That makes you feel understood because he's helping you do what you need most, resting.
