Why Does It Sound Different?
If you're close to the lightning, you hear a big boom right away. If you're farther away, the sound takes longer to reach you, so it might be more of a low rumble or even a soft whisper.
Examples
- When you're in a valley and lightning strikes a mountain, the thunder might feel like it's coming from everywhere at once.
- Sometimes thunder can be so quiet that it feels more like a whisper.
