Thunder is the sound of lightning. When lightning hits, it makes a loud boom because it heats up the air really fast. The hot air expands and pushes the cool air out like a balloon popping. That’s what we hear as thunder! It might take a little time for the sound to reach us, which is why we sometimes see lightning first and then hear the boom later.
Examples
- You hear thunder later than you see lightning because light is faster than sound.
- Sometimes thunder rolls because the sound bounces off buildings or hills.
