Hiccups are like a little surprise your body gives you. When something surprises your tummy, it sends a message to your brain that says, 'Hey! Something happened!' Your brain then tells your diaphragm, the muscle you use to breathe, to take a quick breath and make a short sound called a hiccup. If this happens over and over, it becomes a hiccup episode. To stop hiccups, people sometimes do funny things like holding their breath or drinking water quickly, these tricks can trick your brain into stopping the hiccups.
Examples
- A kid drinks a whole soda in one go and starts hiccuping nonstop.
- Someone gets startled by a loud noise while eating, and suddenly they start hiccuping.
- An old man laughs so hard at a joke that he can't stop hiccuping for several minutes.
