What causes continental drift and plate tectonics?

Imagine the Earth is like a giant, slow-moving puzzle floating on thick, warm soup. The big puzzle pieces are called Continental Plates. They don't stay in one spot because the "soup" underneath them is moving.

What Moves the Plates?

Deep inside the Earth, the rock is not solid like a sidewalk. It is hot and gooey, kind of like peanut butter in the summer. This layer is called the mantle. Because the core of the Earth is super hot, the heat makes the mantle rock move in slow circles, similar to how hot air rises and cool air sinks in a pot of boiling water.

When you heat a pot of water, you see bubbles rising. This is called a convection current.

These convection currents push and pull on the bottom of the crust. When the hot rock rises, it pushes the plate up. When the rock cools and sinks, it drags the plate down. This constant pushing and pulling makes the continents slide slowly across the planet's surface.

It takes millions of years, so we can't see it moving with our eyes.

Think of it like driving a toy car on a conveyor belt. The belt is the moving mantle, and the car is the continent. The heat from the Earth's center is the engine that keeps the belt moving. That is why our continents drift apart or crash into each other, creating mountains and earthquakes.
