What causes albedo changes?

Albedo changes happen when surfaces get lighter or darker, just like how a white shirt reflects more light than a black one.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, maybe it’s a shiny red car. When the sun shines on it, it looks bright and warm because it absorbs a lot of sunlight. Now imagine if that same car got covered in dirt or mud. It would look darker, and not as shiny anymore. That means it reflects less light, albedo changes!

Sometimes, ice melts into water, like when an ice cube turns into puddles on your kitchen counter. Ice is very white and shiny, so it reflects a lot of sunlight. Water is darker, so it absorbs more heat, making the surface warmer, which can cause even more melting!

Sometimes plants grow where there was no grass before, or maybe snow falls on top of dark ground. These changes make surfaces either lighter or darker over time, just like when you paint a wall white instead of blue.

So albedo changes are like switching between your brightest and dimmest toys, it all depends on what's reflecting the light!
